Sacred and secularOn one of her original songs, a 12-bar blues titled “Runaway,” she combines sacred and secular sentiments, at one point singing, “I believe my soul’s found a happy home and left me waiting here to suffer on my own.” “With blues and gospel, the feeling to me is the same,” she says. Another of Foster’s crowd-pleasing favorites is her musical rendition of Maya Angelou’s “Phenomenal Woman,” a self-affirming poem often recited by African American schoolgirls at Black History Month assemblies. Foster has never met or spoken to Angelou, but during a performance in North Carolina, after she first recorded the song in 2006 on an album titled “The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster,” she found flowers from the poet waiting for her in her dressing room.
