Nick Offerman on Parks And Recreation and his comically oversized penis: Perhaps the great irony of Nick Offerman’s iconic status as Ron Swanson—Parks And Recreation’s libertarian luddite, man of few words but many skills—is that he’s celebrated by the exact sort of TV-watching, Internet-addicted shut-in that Ron would despise. Not that Offerman is one for irony: Like the breakout character he’s honed over four seasons on the NBC comedy, he’s thoroughly no-nonsense—just one of the many traits the two men have in common, like shared talents for playing the saxophone and woodworking. The farm-bred Offerman broke into performing in the Chicago theater scene by building sets in addition to acting in front of them, and he’s retained that earthy, rough-hewn sensibility ever since. And though it took a while before casting directors found the right role to take advantage of it (aside from the odd bit part in films like Sin City or TV shows such as Gilmore Girls and Deadwood), eventually, the right role found him.

Parks And Recreation: “Eagleton”: I had an improv teacher in Chicago who used to tell us, "specificity kills ambiguity." Meaning that the more detailed and nuanced a joke is, the richer the pay-off. Audiences glob on to unambiguous things in humor; weirdly, even more than when someone tries not to alienate anyone by making something far too general. As a student of comedy, it seems counterintuitive until you see it in action. Ron Swanson's a prime example: It's not that he loves meat and thinks turkey burgers are wussy, it's that he's gone so far as to create his own version of a turkey burger that, actually, makes a twisted kind of sense. He doesn't moonlight as a musician, he's a fedora-wearing jazz saxophonist known as Duke Silver—very popular with the over-65 ladies. One of the keys to Parks & Rec's success is just how specific its characters are built out.

Parks And Recreation: “Ron & Tammy: Part Two”: Last year's "Ron & Tammy" was one of the most amazing things Parks & Recreation has ever done. Other than the brief glimpses behind the Duke Silver and Ron "Fuckin'" Swanson curtains, it was the first time we'd had a chance to really get to know the man behind the mustache—and see what he's like when part of that 'stache gets torn off. "Ron & Tammy" demonstrated that Ron Swanson has his weaknesses, and when he flies off the handle, he doesn't mess around. Megan Mulally was pitch-perfect as the psycho ex-wife, and the pair—a real-life married couple—were able to push the envelope of borderline disgusting physical love and provide unadulterated face-smashing and lines like "The woman knows her way around a penis." It was a celebration of all that makes Ron Swanson weird and wonderful.

Michael Schur: Michael Schur has enjoyed a fruitful comedy career thus far. He was a writer on Saturday Night Live from 1997 until 2004, when he left to begin work on a project many naysayers were ready to denounce before it began: The American adaptation of The Office. He worked under Greg Daniels for three years before following him to Parks And Recreation, which began as a spin-off, but quickly ditched the notion and became its own show. Daniels and Schur conceived of Parks And Rec’s characters and the beloved town of Pawnee, Indiana; then Daniels handed over the reins to Schur, who serves as its showrunner. The show got off to a shaky start before rising in its second season to become arguably the funniest sitcom on television. Then it somehow got even better this year. Schur has had his work cut out for him during the excellent third season, though: It began at midseason, and production was rushed, then delayed, due to Amy Poehler’s pregnancy. Now that Parks And Rec has wrapped its early-season storylines (namely the Harvest Festival), The A.V. Club called Schur to discuss why people love Ron Swanson, why everybody hates Jerry, and what makes Andy the perfect foil to April.
