New TV channel ‘with backbone’ debuts in Beaumont: Fans of western and action movies have a new channel to cure the winter doldrums. Grit, a KFDM sub-channel, debuted Dec. 29 on channel 6.3 for viewers who have an antenna. Grit, which is described by owners as “TV with a backbone,” shows western, war and action films as well as a few classic western television shows. The network was first launched in April 2013. This weekend, viewers can enjoy such classics as “Rio Grande,” “Young Guns” and “High Plains Drifter,” the first western Clint Eastwood ever directed.

TV – Analog ends; Digital begins: Viewers not yet prepared for the end of the analog era can expect to begin seeing the results at 9 a.m. today when KFDM, the local CBS affiliate, ushers in the age of digital television in Southeast Texas by turning off its analog signal. Aaron Trahan, director of merchandising for Conn’s Appliances, said converter box sales surged during the lead-up to last holiday season, when the state of Texas ran numerous public service announcements about the upcoming transition. A federal mandate requiring stations nationwide to stop broadcasting analog signals was originally set to take effect Feb. 17, but that deadline was extended to June 12 by the U.S. Congress to grant viewers more time to prepare. In addition to airing countless public service announcements to prepare viewers, the stations also have had to take steps of their own to prepare for the deadline.

KFDM, Time Warner reach deal to air SLC network: The Southland Conference Television Network will televise 36 events this year, including 16 basketball games and nine football games – starting with Saturday’s game between Grambling State and Northwestern State. The network also will televise tournament championship games for volleyball and baseball, as well as a monthly feel-good show about the SLC, titled “Inside the Southland Conference.”
